As I write this, the novel coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19, has spread to all continents except Antarctica, and has infected 52 countries and territories. The total number of cases globally stands at 82,784, of which 46,617 cases are active, 33,350 cases are recovered, and there have been 2,817 deaths. A total of 60 cases have been confirmed in the United States, where I live, although 42 of those are people repatriated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The CDC yesterday confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in the U.S. for which the source cannot be traced. This first instance of community spreading is in California's Bay Area. There have so far been no deaths in the U.S. due to the virus. I regret that I did not start this blog much sooner, given that I and a friend of mine have been tracking the developments since January.
