Coronavirus Containment Has Failed

"A leaked report claims that actual covid-19 cases within China are 52x higher than the 78K reported by authorities.

"Since yesterday, new cases have been reported in Sweden, Greece, France, Spain, Germany, and, of course, Italy.... The virus appears as virulent as ever."

Global infection is climbing at an exponential (non-linear) rate, with cases doubling worldwide every 4 to 5 days.

First U.S. Novel Coronavirus Case With Unclear Origins Confirmed in California

Coronavirus far more likely than Sars to bond to human cells due to HIV-like mutation, scientists say

"The new coronavirus has an HIV-like mutation that means its ability to bind with human cells could be up to 1,000 times as strong as the Sars virus, according to new research by scientists in China and Europe.

"The discovery could help to explain not only how the infection has spread but also where it came from and how best to fight it."

Reinfection or Recrudescence?

There is evidence that people who have had the virus can be reinfected, causing concerns that there is no reliable immunity. But there is also the possibility of recrudescence, which is "the revival of material or behavior that had previously been stabilized, settled, or diminished." (Wikipedia) Basically, recrudescence is like the virus getting its butt kicked by the patient's immune system, but then the virus gets up off the floor with an uppercut.

Information Overload Has Been Reached

As I write this, the novel coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19, has spread to all continents except Antarctica, and has infected 52 countries and territories. The total number of cases globally stands at 82,784, of which 46,617 cases are active, 33,350 cases are recovered, and there have been 2,817 deaths. A total of 60 cases have been confirmed in the United States, where I live, although 42 of those are people repatriated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The CDC yesterday confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in the U.S. for which the source cannot be traced. This first instance of community spreading is in California's Bay Area. There have so far been no deaths in the U.S. due to the virus. I regret that I did not start this blog much sooner, given that I and a friend of mine have been tracking the developments since January.
